if you have a head screwed on your shoulders then TBH there's no real reason why it cant be a 1st bike, just respect the power and build up your ability

But also due to the gearing. I've been cruising on the motorway, then looked down and thought "how the feck did I reach 110 without realising?!"

The 650 is ever so slightly more forgiving if you tram it into a corner, but if he's good with self control & doesn't become over confident too quickly, an sv1000 will prolly be alright for him?

The sad thing is that he'll never have the chance to acclimatise to a 600/650 and then fully appreciate/enjoy the step up to a 1000... Guess the real issue here is

experience < power = risk?
My exact point, well done that man!

Honestly.....having tried both, I think the 650 is more fun. I did not fins the 1000 much fun in corners to be honest, compared to the 650 it was lumbering and heavy.

If you were to get a 1000 before trying something more fun in the corner then I suggest you risk becoming a straight line lover who hates corners.

i do think in term's of experience building somebody who's worked their way upo the range will be asuperior rider as they'll have learned to push the bike's more rather than just straight line squirting a big bike imo anyway.

I went from a Kawasaki AR125 to the current SV1000. Main problem was using 1st gear in roundabouts and threpenny bitting it with that high on/off torque characteristic. Nowadays I use a higher gear and corner faster - much better! Either that, or hold right hand fixed if cornering in low gear. But a great bike. It will always be able to do more than I am capable of handling............!
