And also if you want to race, then there's IMO nothing to improve your riding better than just being on the road all the time.

You could do a trillion miles on the road and it wouldn't prepare you for racing ...

That is a bit like saying that swimming every day prepares you for canoeing. Sure due to the nature of what it is, being a good swimmer is a bonus, but it won't get you very far in actual canoeing itself!!

Surely the experience is going to make you much more "part" of whatever bike you're on?

I agree that it's never going to be the same as actual track time.

It'd be natural to think that, but I actually think you will find that road riding is a hindrance to racing, not an asset!! ...

Presuming they were doing it before/alongside racing, a lot of racers quit road riding as it negatively effects their track performance!!

I seriously considered it when I was racing proper, but using the bike to commute was just too useful!! ... I did however STOP going for 'joy' rides on my road bike

Some of the fastest riders/racers had NEVER had a road bike

Indeed and I've seen racers who weren't particulary hot stuff on the road either.

Many cite that the road is too dangerous - poor surfaces, changing surfaces, othe road users, hazards, etc etc.

I think that road-riding is too slow for practising racing. Your brain just never gets calibrated to think that fast for those speeds

There are an increasing number of jobs and departments in the police for bikers, just stick with it and apply for one when you can.

I would'nt say I am that fast, but I make good progress where I can, at the end off the day I still want to go home, no point going stupid!
