Your bearings may well be fine. Your problem will be getting the swing arm pivot undone as it uses a special castleated nut. If you're lucky you may be able to get the socket from a friendly mech but my local Suzuki dealers all refused to sell me one, saying it was not a recommended home job (rubbish). I bought a spare socket the right size and spent a day with a Dremmel making the castelations. Stripping the back end off was straight forward (I hung my bike from my garage rafters by the rear frame), re-greased the bearings, back together no problems.

At your mileage it would be a VERY sensible thing to do in case your bearings had less factory grease in than mine. Plus you can put your endless chain on while you're at it and worry less about whether that cut/join was done properly..

What bike its it.. as if its a Curvy SV then I know to get the swing arm off you will need to get the exhaust of too. I know as when I worked on my bike I took the chain off as a whole and getting that exhaust out is a right pain.
Also you will need a 27mm castle socket to get the swingarm nut off.

40 squid for a bleedin socket?!

another question - -will i have to take the exhaust off to take off the swingarm? (it's a 2003 pointy sv650s)
why is every poxy job 10x more complex than it seems ???

I took the rear parts of my exhaust off my curvy just to make access to the suspension links easier. They were VERY hard to un-do so it was a wise move taking the can out of harm's reach in case I slipped up.

The link from Skeetly looks good. Twenty notes for a custom made one seems fair. It's porbably a lot harder and less liely to crack than the butchered socket I used.

Just go for it Chris. If a ham-fisted accountant like me can do it anyone can!!

Because the SV is more of a pain in the rse than it should be considering what sort of bike it is.

Everything's been said really... Just remember to get all the bearings nice and clean with some rags and degreaser, then regrease.
