If the driver claims they didn't know they're knocked the bikes, there is a witness seeing them doing it, so insurance (if the offender is insured) will pick up the cost of repair to the bikes.

If they have no just reasoning for not knowing they'd done it, they're up a smelly creek for knowingly leaving the scene of an accident.

It needs reporting to the police so that the vehicle can be tracked, driver named, insurance company informed etc etc.

Well done mate.

Perhaps you could leave a note on the bikes asking the owners to call you. Then they can take it on from there.

Yup: That's what I did - took details & printed off two copies one for each bike.

Went back at lunch time to enure they hadn't blown off. Figure that it's what someone would do for me in a similar circumstance etc.

I think it IS a matter for the police. They have caused damage and walked away. In my book that is a crime.

My car got drove into a while ago and the driver drove away. My nephew saw it happen and I called the police. They came straight away.

It's got nothing to do with the police, it's a fail to stop damage only accident, i.e. no injuries or offences so they won't be interested, it's classed as a non reportable accident. They may well attend and give advice but very little if anything will be done. It's purely a names and addresses exchanged and let the insurance company get involved and sort it out, that's what they get there inflated premiums for! As in this case where names and address have not been exchanged the bike owners need only supply the registration of the offending vehicle and their insurance company who should enquire via the DVLA and get registered keeper details for the offending vehicle, they will then write to them and ask them to confirm who was the driver at the time of the accident and to supply their insurance details.

Now where was that thread I read the other day about people giving advice on subjects they don't know about.......

I'd still argue that it was a matter for the police. If folks like you weren't around, who would advise the parties that were pretty obviously non-fault on what to do about getting costs back etc?

Your insurance company? that's what we pay them hundreds of pounds a year for.

I think Kinvig is a top man for taking the time and making the effort to find out who did this. Well done mate

Nope. If there isn't another driver/rider there to exchange details with then you can leave and then notify your insurance company of the other vehicles details (in an ideal world!) All you have to do is exchange names and address. Now if it's a personal injury accident...then it is an offence to leave the scene and the police should attend.

Any way this is all drifting away from the original thread and we're forgetting that what Kinvig did is what most of us would have done....the right thing.
