Precisely. My reaction to the ridiculous statements is similar:

Them: Ride a motorcycle? You must be mad! have you ever seen what happens to a biker when he, (always 'he' you'll note), gets hit by a 38 tonne truck? (Feel free to substitute your recently regurgitated motorcycling horror story).

Me: Pedestrian? You must be mad! have you ever seen what happens to a human when hit by a 38 tonne truck?

Conversation usually quite short.

That one will be very useful in my repertoire of responses!

One of the attractions of biking as a student is that the most people you can 'endanger' is 2 and not even that if on a wee 125 whereas taking responsibility for potentially 5 or more (boots have been known to get used ) is something I would hate to do unless I'd had a considerable number of years experience!
