What the car did or didn't do, or what the biker should have done is completely irrelevant.
The bike was moving at silly speeds, as Fizz has pointed out that bike will appear out of nowhere at those speeds. The cage driver could have performed a textbook maneouvre perfectly and in the split second between checking his mirrors, making a decision and executing a maneouvre, the bike enters the equation. Cars on the road are not driven by people with skills like Lewis Hamilton, and they can't be expected to see a bike coming when it is doing 170mph. Last edited by -Ralph-; 14-06-09 at 10:27 PM. |

You don't expect to die when you do anything a bit silly, and your idea of a silly moment on an SV is exactly the same as these lads doing 170 on -10R. The difference in capabilities is rather marked.

Very well said Chris.
I didn't see very* much wrong with the entire video. The fateful overtake was just a result of things going very quickly wrong. *Definitely not suicidal/homicidal although obviously not textbook. I'm sure they didn't go out without a care in the world to their families, it's just that it went a bit wrong. |

And as others have said, he clearly wasnt doig 170 when it all wnet wrong but tbh no atter what the speed he should never have gone for that overtake there but then again how many of us have had close shaves on a spirited ridw and only after the fact thought of what could have been but for the grace of god.

Surely the overtaking car would've been quite close to the camper/thing on the other side of the road?

I have been that car in a similar situation ( a473 on way to pembroke)
3 lane rd narrowing to 2 with zig zags i check my mirrors as often in the car as on the bike So mirror checked indicate mirror went for it ( in a not slow car ) at which point a brand new R1 flies up along side me clips the back and goes into the hedge lucky that nothing was comming and i know that unless the bike was behind the car for a while there is a good chance that the car dirver didn't even see him (took traffic cams to clear me of dangerous driving R! guy alright but he was a born agin 45 yr old on this 5 ride since buying the bike ) |

When i first read the article it made it sound as tho it happened while they were in a high speed section of their ride. Seeing the vid now they were only seconds away from leaving a roundabout and full of adrenalin from the speeds they had hit before they got to the roundabout...and one of them was determined to get back up to those speeds as quick as possible. Such a shame.

The road at that point is quite wide, although not wide enough for two marked lanes in each direction. It's common practice for vehicles coming into the roundabout to arrange themselves into two orderly lines. Similarly it's common for vehicles coming off the roundabout to go for a quick overtake to get past slower traffic rather than wait for the second lane at the top of the hill. Put both circumstances together and it gets pretty tight. I've seen a fair number of near misses there, and this one didn't work out.

Got to remember 90mph is 40m/s: you can check your mirrors, see a bike a good 100m away and then prepare to pull out, only to find it right up your backside.
If this is what you honestly think and you're not just trolling then it's pretty sad. There's better places to find out how fast your bike is than a public road filled with other cars, plus 90mph is excessive for an overtake like that. Hell, that's not overtaking, it's high speed filtering. |
