Default Bump starting my 250 Bandit.

So i went into the garage to get the bike out to go meet some mates about to hop press the starter and the engine doesn't turn over i thought ok the starter motor was temperamental a while back so I'll bump start it i live next to a big hill so its not really a problem down the hill got a bit of speed and when I let the clutch out it just locked the back wheel. pushed it back up the hill and into the garage, whipped the alternator cover off and tried to turn the flywheel with my hand and try to move the back wheel and see if the flywheel moved well it moved about 2 mm so the engine definatly isnt turning over. Does any one have any ideas what may be wrong? Its a 250 Bandit, little 250 Inline 4. Thanks

Bump starting an SV takes timing and pracice mate. You gotta bump your butt down hard onto the seat at the same time as letting the clutch out to ensure the rear whell has enough traction and grip to turn the engine otherwise it just locks as you say.

Not an SV its a Bandit had to bump start it a fair bit when the starter was being Dicky and I never had a problem

THey are shimmed(I think) Its nearly 20 years old so i cant see it being a complicated engine.

Screw and locknut came before shims.

Original GSXR750 was screw+nut, 1100 was screw n nut up until 1990-odd. Last of the oil-boilers were shimmed. All the water boilers - shimmed. SRADs and everything since ... shims.

Will the flywheel turn with the clutch in?
If yes, gearbox problem. If no, engine problem.
Remove some parts of the starter gear, now will it turn? If yes, starter clutch or motor issue. If no, engine issue.

Basically start removing ancilliaries driven from the crank, if no joy, pull the head cover off and check for obvious mechanical carnage. Then take the head off and see if valves have met pistons.
