Triumph Sprint, or even an older big Daytona.

How about a nice hypermotard with large tank conversion and full luggage kit... Sounds perfect stretch the budget a little

IIRC there was a PVC Brake recall on them but im not 100% sure on that, also theres an Oil pipe leak recall on some of the VTEC models (02 - 08 again IIRC) if ever you spot one and want to check if its got anything outstanding drop me a PM with the reg no and i should be able to get the information from that

test rode an RSVR a few years back. scared my panties off. actually thats not strictly true, i was monster impressed with the speed of it. Altho the ride position wasnt ideal, felt a little heavy on the wrists. and not sure what it'd be like for a pillion

ideally id be looking for faired, i learned on an ER5 and whilst that was fun felt buffeted about a bit, and think if i was touring that might be an issue.

Daytona 955 was an option, tested one of them about 3 year ago, bike was about 3 years old and i thought the gearbox was pants. clunky as fook, wasnt selecting properly...

Gearbox is clunky, but should be selecting properly if you are positive with it. The SV has a very slick gearbox though compared to a lot of bikes, especially Triumphs, so it makes a mediocre gearbox feel bad by comparison. I've often thought when reading reviews of top notch bikes where gearbox issues are noted "how come Suzuki can make it work perfectly on a £4000 SV650?"

Don't let it put you off the bike, it's something that I don't even notice anymore now that I've done 1000 miles on it. You just learn to be more positive with it.

I have one sat at the bottom of the garden, that Pegasus comutes every day on. Its a peach of a bike. Can give you 16mpg or 65mpg.....depending on riding like miss daisy or rossi
Its a great big armchair as far as pillion is concerned. I've not sat on the back in many a year, theres bags of room and you don't feel like you are perched on a postage stamp!

Your budget will get you a really nice Fireblade 954 which will do all of the things you ask with ease and you'll have at least a grand left over.

My 929 which I believe is pretty much the same is much more comfortable than the SV I did over 3000 miles in 10 days last year including a 600 mile blast down to Lyon in one go. You can even get hard luggage for the 954!!

It will keep up with anything on a track day if you are a good enough rider and is more than enough for the road.

And it's a Honda so will last forever.

Of if you want even more comfort get a blackbird. My mate has just got one of these and it just eats up miles with no effort at all, it's a little to easy for me though, some people could even go as far as to say it's a little boring.
