please put the bike in gear. even if the sidestand is a bit dodgy the bike will not roll and fall over. i personally always park with the bike in gear for numerous reasons.

for the question on how to check if the bike is fully upright then doing the above you will feel the balance point, it doesn't have to be exact you know.

SV oil level, below the MIN and its by, by engine. above the MAX and its dodgy gear changing. anything between the MIN and MAX is ok. always check the oil level every time you take the bike out for a ride, i have seen faaaarrrr too many SV being killed due to low oil level.

If you look at the level just after a ride some of the oil will be up in the heads. Check it before a ride, as Bibs mentions above, so that it has had time to drain down and give you a good reading.

2 to 3 minutes after being at normal operating temperature.

Though if there's a breeze it'll blow any petrol fumes away if you drop the bike and some leaks out

After seeing the inspection mirror, and contemplating on achieving the nirvana of verticalness I think that I might have to get this:

But where would you stick it? there are no guaranteed level surfaces.
