Another point is that the cross-point/phillips head bits in the original toolkit fit the screws on the Bikes better as they are J.I.S(Japanese Industry Standard) screws and not normal cross-heads so an original kit is well worth having IMHO

I bought a set of JIS screwdriver bits on eBay, but frustratingly are marked as PH (probably a licensing issue), so I had to colour them in to tell them apart. They definitely fit JIS heads, though. They're made by Vessel if anyone needs some.

I reckon this is the reason so many older screws on Japanese bikes have been chewed.I know I've had to drill a few out

Probably, although I still managed with one carb bolt - it was the last one and I was just congratulating myself on having the right equipment, too.
