I went to the south back in June of this year, and had an automatic thingy that opened up the toll barriers and you then get your bank card or credit card billed at the end of each month you use your gizmothingy, depending on which card you have registered. Much easier than messing about with money, AND you get to use a reserved lane so no queing at all !!!!!!!!!!!!

Not looking at any dates in particular, my wife is French (from the North), and we'll be moving to live in south of France (in the Languedoc) in the next couple of years. If I can get from North to South with a bike for 70 euro's it might become a regular route for me. I was just hoping they had a website or your could book online at voyages-sncf.com or something.

For the little extra involved travel in comfort and arrive refreshed Motorail. admitted you see much more countryside doing the nationals. Regarding using the Autoroute for fuel/tolls economy and speed its quicker but still a chase-------Your choice, but for me it would be let the train take the strain

Really like the idea of using this one way, as it will give me more time to enjoy touring in S France next year, rather than falling asleep on autoroutes. Looking at the motorail website -looks expensive £400+ one way, although once you add cost of fuel/tolls/accomodation it would still save me money. Its annoying that you pay same as a car full of 6 people though.
The autotrain from Lille looks like a lot cheaper, but I could imagine a lot of hassle and less secure as you travel separately from your bike. Which one should I go for?

Where do you get the 'little extra involved' ? Last time I checked the north/south rail option it was prohibitively expensive!

You don't think you can get from north to south France using your bike and accommodation for less than £400? Blimey!! How long you want to take to do it? 12 days?. AT most 2 days and Max £120!!

What website are you looking at?
Found this one but it says no bookings for 2008 until 21st November

http://www.raileurope.co.uk/frenchmotorrail/

Would be nice to get some clarity on price, your website says 400 notes, Redbouy has local knowledge and says 70 notes.

Mac, have you used it and what did you pay?

I could easy spend £400 travelling down to S France- probably £100 fuel/tyres, tolls £50 2-3 nights accomodation £150 and then you have money for extra day or two of beer/food. Ok you could do it for £200 I suppose if you get a cheap B&B. I thought I read you could share this cost between 2 bikes but cant find the link now- is this right?
