On the sidestand you wont see oil, holding it level is the best way, I have also seen somebody rest a mine spirit level on the tank to get it perfect. (possibly pete - top idea)

or just get the bobbins in the cups on the stand, then lift it until the rear wheel is held upright but not off the ground, use left foot to maintain stability, right hand on front brake to prevent rolling and lean forward to read level whilst bike is perfectly level front to back and left to right...

![]() Yorkie Chris is right. I use a small spirit level resting on the filler cap, but it's a two person job to check the level cos a soon as I lean over to check the sight glass I tilt the bike anyway. With regards to too much oil in, I believe it'll just blow up into the airbox via the breathers unless there is a massive amount extra which could cause a hydraulic lock IMO. |

Come on guys, we're making this far too complicated.
Kneel on the floor with the bike on the sidestand, hold the frame and pull it towards you until the bike feels upright, give it a wee rock so the weights neither pulling away from you or pushing towards you, check the level stays between the markers on the sightglass as you rock. Stop rocking when it feels upright and check again. Let the bike back down gently onto the sidestand. Simple as that! Two second job. Paddock stands and spirit levels? Talk about making life difficult for yourself! ![]() Right - Ralph the grumpy bugg3r will go away now, some wee baby boy's kept him up all night! ![]() |

![]() not sure about yours, but my bike isn't actually upright when it's balanced, even with my tiny titanium exhaust it will fall to the right every time i ease it off the paddock stand, with the original cannon on it was even worse, so your oil level will always appear to be a bit less than it is if you use the force to determine when it's level my bike lives on the paddock stand to save space, so i get home from a ride with the engine hot, leave it for a couple of minutes as i make a cuppa, then check the oil while i'm putting it to bed plus having had it fall on me once, i'd rather not take the chance again, light bike my **** ![]()

My drive slopes down and the slopes back up again. I went round the house with a spirit level looking for a flat piece of ground. When I found it, that's the exact same spot I check the oil every time.

Since I screwed up my oil change by doing it on the side stand I realise that the only sensible way for a lone person to do it is using a stand of some kind. I daresay a few degrees adrift front to back or side to side doesn't mean jack. And anyone who hasn't got a bike with a centre stand got to have a paddock or abba.
A spirit level!!! bloody hell! lmao!! I have heard some autistic things but that is a pearler!! |

if the bike is level, and the window is full, tilt the bike each way a bit, if it is still full, drop some oil, if you can see the top of the oil, it will be ok IMO
