I have had a plug come out of a tyre before. It was done "professionally" but I have also had a mate who's brake calipers bolts were not done up proberly and fell out from the same shop.

Basically from my expence its not that serious, the tyre does do down pretty quick but not instantly, not like a blowout anyway. The actually spining of a wheel seems to keep the carcass in shape for quite a long time, the bike really wont want to turn though. The whole where the plug fell out was about 3mm wide so pretty large.

If it were me I would get in plugged, saves a lot of money. Call me a synic but its a lot more profitable for a shop to sell you a new tyre than a plug.

I would get it plugged unless the tyre is coming to the end of its life, in which case new hoops.

Plugging a center tread hole is standard in the london area, up north however 3 shops i tried in Inverness refused to plug a hole but were very keen to sell me a new tyre (luckily the imminent threat of a liability law suit against them did'nt stretch to selling self repair kits which held till the tyre died)

IMHO a sidewall puncture is tyre death but most others can easily and safely be repaired, shops refusing to do it are just jumping on the 'Im afraid of litigation' bandwaggon and rubbing thier hands in glee at the prospect of stiffing you for a tyre rather than a ?20 repair !
