I inherited Suze with a very squared off rear, with a hole( but not punctured), about 8000 miles and me on the back. I did about 1000 on top of that. It were awful, I said i would never have a tyre like that again. felt like you were going to fall of it were that square.

I got some Metzler sportec jobbies on the black one when I bought it, they were brand new..put about 2000 miles on that and I got on with them so well I got rid, asap. There were nowt physically wrong with them( just a slight tear from france) , I just thought they were sh!!yte

So if I'm not happy...I get rid, simple as...

I generally buy new tyres when I feel the grip is fading.

Having lots of pretty high speed bends near by that you know well helps. When you have to slow down too much for bends, then it's time to change.

Obviously the exception is puntures.

I'm a year round rider, and virtually 365 days a year, and I wouldn't let the tyre go down to canvass. I have had a few squared tyres, I replace tyres when they are either rediculously squared off or when they are getting close to the minimum legal tread depth. Riding year round you never know what the weather will be from day to day, would be very stupid to get caught out and then risk a ride with no tread in damp/rain.

600+ miles a week for me, so planning in advance is needed!
