FECK! There shouldn't be anything in the exhaust to actually burn if it's a metal exhaust (which it looks to be, Scorpion[1]?). Only thing I can think that might burn is the rubber strap and I've got my exhaust very hot (trackdays with a road silencer) with no signs of anything going wrong.
At a guess either the fueling or ign has gone wrong and an amount of petrol has entered the silencer and burnt off. Druid [1] Looks like mine, (except crispier).

Could the packing in the exhaust have been the cause of the fire.
Even if not I would contact the manufactures as they might be interested. |

It doesn't really burn, unless your motor is soaking it in oil for you? More of a 2 stroke problem that though.
I say remove the can and see how it runs.

fire brigade guys (think they appeared cause a passing ambulance stopped to check i was ok and hadn't come off) reckoned that it was the packing of the exhaust that was on fire - flames were coming from inside and around the metal bracket from inside.
I was amazed - and restored some of my faith in people - by the amount of people that stopped to check i was ok whilst i was waiting for the breakdown to appear. |

Mmmh could have happened to any bike then, though strange if it was the packing. How old is the can, and how many miles do you get to a tank?

If the packing was on fire it is one of two things;
1) Wrong material has been used in the packing (only applicable if it was recently repacked) 2) A flammable substance has entered the silencer and soaked packing causing it to ignite. |

Sounds like a good reason not to have any packing to me
![]() Bad luck mate. Lissa told me that the packing burnt out of their art can, which I now have on my bike. |
