I have owned a few 900cc plus road bikes. I got a dedicated track bike which was a GSXR750. Initially it was too fast but it gave me room to grow with it. Ideally a 600 would have done as well, but it was on offer for the right price at the time. Each to their own i think.

Buy a cheapy that has slid down the road and spend some dosh on it bringing it up to the spec you want
i.e. Kwak 636 4200mile £1800,spent £1200 buying new and used racing bits Result= SPANKING TRACK BIKE |

depends on the tracks you are racing, most likely you will be faster on a 600 then a 1000
