Hate to throw a spanner in the works, but was this on private property and not the highway? Where does it stand if so, as the police won't get involved?

Open to public access I think you'll find, that makes it possible for the Police to become involved as it's classed as an RTC.

Car parks such as this is classed as land where public can gain access wether by payment or not and therefore is considered as an "off road" RTC and can be investigated.

If this car park is closed down and public has no right off way then it would not be covered, but I assume this was not the case as its a shop which was open and was customer parking.

Definition of a Reportable Collision

If owing to the presence of a vehicle on a road an accident occurs which causes injury or damage to:
  • a person - other than the driver of that vehicle an animal - other than an animal being carried in that vehicle or trailer ("animal" means horse, ass, mule, cattle, sheep, pig, goat or dog)
  • a vehicle - other than the vehicle which caused the accident
  • property constructed on, affixed to, growing in, or otherwise forming part of the land where the road is.
The driver must stop and give their name and address, the name and address of the owner of the vehicle and registration number of the vehicle to a person having reasonable grounds for requiring that information.
If for any reason the driver does not give his name and address, it must be reported at a police station or to a constable, in person, as soon as reasonably practicable and in any case within 24 hours.

'Off-Road Collisions

The police can only investigate off-road collisions in a public place, e.g. a council car park or supermarket car park. If the collision occurred in a private car park, e.g. a car park not for public parking, then no action can be taken. Failing to stop and report an accident only applies to roads. The police have no power to request documents for off-road collisions. '

Shelly Woozle, that is very interesting!

I only say that because just before I got married my now ex husband had an accident, going into a carpark, and the other driver didn't stop. He reported it to the police, had the number of the car and they didn't want to know.

Now, one of the many reasons I got divorced was because he couldn't tell me the truth about anything, and you have now made me wonder what the real truth of the story was, hummmm.

Was this in the Northampton HG?

Not hard to chase someone round the car park either...You run straight accross to the exit over by home bargains and they ain't getting out.

I wonder if the little **** will get away with it if he was put under Duress to drive away....

Personally my first reaction would have been to call the police however I have no idea if they would attend in that sittuation....
