It doesn't.

Last week I washed both my Arais out using Johnsons baby shampoo in the shower. You need something with neutral Ph and baby shampoo is the best thing. Both mine were hung upside down in the airing cupboard by the straps until they were dry.

Do not ever try to force dry them with hair dryers etc, you will cook the expanded polystyrene liner and make them useless.

I just use normal shampoo, never had a problem with any lids over the years As Northwind said, drying is important, can take a few days (even in a warm place ) but I would not leave it for the water to gather at the top of the lid by placing it upside down unless it had a drain hole there

This is the method I use too.

I wash and dry mine the way Mr Arai recommends, so if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.

Both mine have air vents at the top of the lid, so drainage isn't a problem anyway. What damage do you think clean water is going to do to your helmet liner? Before you answer this, remind yourself that in summer the lining is soaking up your sweat and excess body fats, and probably doesn't get washed as often as it really should.

I guarantee you, if you do it in the sink with the plug in you'll be disgusted by the colour of the water. I can't find the being sick smiley, you'll have to imagine him in here.

Wash the lining with it in the helmet. It means taking the whole lid in the shower with you, just don't get caught by the missus cos she'll think something very strange is occuring. Don't use very hot water cos it softens the glue used to attach the liner to the expanded polystyrene shell, but some heat is good because it expands the air pockets in the liner and makes it fit better afterwards.
