That's just it, I can't do that. If I pull the choke in all the way, then the revs are way up (3-4k) and then I can't put in first...

Depends what you do when you get on it. Letting it idle all the way to 80 degrees before pinning open the throttle, dumping the clutch and then thrashing it up the road is far from sympathetic either.

I had a similar problem and posted it on here, got a similar response.

Mine seems to have stopped doing it now, it must have been crap on the exhaust or radiator. Most people said it would be this and not to worry!

I am fitting a fender extender and belly pan in the next couple of weeks and hope this will reduce some crap hitting the bike!!

Good luck!

I've actually looked a couple of times because I'm really worried it might catch on fire
This does dound a bit like your reg/rec might be on the way out. The regulator dumps any voltage over about 15V through a resistor, and this resistor can get HOT. If / when it eventually burns out you can cook your battery. A sure sign that the regulator is on it's way out is the reg/rec gets very hot, and the resin that the electronics are encased in can melt - hence the burning plastic smell. Might be worth investigating this further mate before it goes completely.

Funny part is just after I bought in spring the reg/rec went down, so I bought a new one.. If this goes as well, then I just guess I'm unlucky (and am supposed to change to a gsxr one). I'm gonna check it out this week, as I'm finally putting it away for winter

My oven's grill smokes and makes a burning smell when it's warming up. It's the splatters from the previous night's sausages burning off the elements
