I would have thought most frogs and newts etc would start slowing down as the weather gets colder, which might explain why it wasn't up to much.

I would say the body was 2-4 inches with the tail about the same size.
It was yellow underneath, was sort of near (about 250-300m) away from a pond! |

Just looked at an image of a crested newt and it looks the same underneath, but it didn't have the spikey bit (not sure what it's called 'crest'?), so still not sure.
Never seen one before, are they common? |

I believe its only the males who have the crests. Its highly likely yours is a female crested although there are a number of similarities with the firebelly. Just going on the location though, fact being the firebellies are used to Asian waters not British, I'd have to go with crested lol. Damn it, where are the newt owners of the org when you need 'em!
