A virtual machine, like VMWare, allows your computer to pretend its another one and run two operating systems at the same time.

It's not a great idea for music though, as it will be higher latency for inputs, which can be a pain for direct recording and midi.

If you do want to go down the dual boot route, setup two partitions, one primary active, and either an extended or another primary, doesn't matter.

Load Windows 98 on the primary, then from Windows 98 stick in your XP CD and run setup from within 98. Reject the prompts to upgrade and tell it you want to do a new installation, selecting the second partition as the target. I'm pretty sure that if you do this from Windows 98, it will edit the boot.ini file for you. If it doesn't, open your boot.ini in notepad from the Windows 98 once XP is installed, and cut and paste it into as post here, we will edit it for you.

the way i do it is have 2 hdd's instal windows on one install 98 on the other then load drivers and stuf to both OS's and when the pc starts click F8 (i think) and select what hdd to boot from (learn what HDD is which) worked for with with xp and vista until i decided vista was pants :P

^ i think he will need more than 1gb of ram thogh, when i used it on xp64 bit ages ago i used 6gb lol
