Nope, well not quite loosen, I think its wear that makes it looser.

I *know* I did mine up properly with locktite & the lock washer and yet when I came to swap the chain/sprockets it was loose and only held by the lock washer.

Good morning all.

Ah the dreaded Suzuki sprocket nut syndrome!

Some time ago I had a GSXR in, where the 'Muppet' owner had tried to undo the nut using an adjustable spanner. He'd managed to round it off completely!
Using an angle grinder I carefully ground a large flat on the nut, to the point where it was a couple of mm from the shaft threads all the way to the sprocket. I then knocked it anti-clockwise using an air chisel. A cold chisel & hammer would work just as well.
The heat generated by the grinding will help defeat the kryptonite sorry, loctite on the threads, & will also expand the nut. Also, the nut will be considerably weaker.
Don't try this at home folks, unless you're confident. You really wouldn't want to grind off the shaft threads would you?

Cheers.

*Thinks*
wonders if bloody huge 3/4inch drive we have at work will do the trick, oh and big metal bar wrapped in polishing cloth and a new impact drive.

3/4 Drive T-bar and a bit of scaffold pole. WHY ARE YOU TAKING IT OFF? and do you have a big enough torque wrench to put it back on?

I'm attempting to do a chain and sprocket change myself, so knowing that the socket is simply tight and that there's not some unseen lock piece is important.

ETA: Duh, I went to the service manual and see that there is, indeed, a lock washer underneath the nut that has to be flattened before the nut can be removed.

It also normally needs to be removed before you can get a socket on!

Default Re: Front sprocket nut left or right hand thread?

I was actually doing a 520 conversion in the process. Just completed the job a few minutes ago. Me and some of my WERA buddies are going to run the bike in an endurance race this weekend and the tired old drive chain needed to go. This will be our first endurance attempt but I've personally been racing sprints and solos with WERA for going on 5 years now.
