I grew up in South Africa where getting a job depends more on your... er, 'ethnic backgound' than your skills. I'm from the wrong 'ethnic background' so my CV never even got a look-in. It did teach me one thing though... a job is a privilege, not a right, something many youngsters would do well to appreciate these days.

And as a wise man once told me, "Better to have a job and wish you didn't than the other way round!"

That aside, today my job makes me feel... bored!

Ive worked for the same outfit for a long time and my conclusions are-----
Have a look at the current strife at British Airways and observe how not to run a firm. They were once the pinnacle of the airline world with a highly motivated and proud workforce, well run and very profitable. Then they decided to "modernise" themselves and employed a suitable management to do the job. They are now teetering on the brink of oblivion with a disgruntled demoralised workforce led by a bunch of useless t0ssers in senior management and making huge losses.
Where I work is very similar and its sad to see a once proud firm brought low by modern management practice. If you cant lead and inspire your workforce you are doomed to utter failure in the long term.

I love my job.

I have a great Team of guys, who work very hard. They are supportive of each other, and surprisingly me too. I do whatever I can to help them do their job, and I reward them whenever I can for their efforts. It's not unusual for me to tell them I want an extra overtime form, or extra hours on a current form for their efforts.

We work hard, and given the opportunity we play hard too, i.e. post meeting we'll have a great time in the bar/restaurant.

My boss seems to have a similar ethos, e.g. a couple of weeks back, after a very hard week, he told me he didn't want me in work till Wednesday. I didn't have to take any leave, it was his way of saying thanks.

The job itself has got very hard in recent times, and occasionally stress and frustration bubble to the surface. But as a Team we are hugely 'together' and the p!55 taking is immense. Some Senior Mgrs feel I'm too close to my Team but the figures certainly show it works.

It's just a job. I work to live. I do not live to work. I could grind my nose and progress if I really wanted to. But the truth is I am happy enough earning what I do for the output I give. Although if something were to land in my lap which cut down my 140 mile a day commute I would probably take it so long as it paid the same as I earn now. I'm just happy I have a job considering the current climate.

Start of September last year I wanted out! My 5 boss had just walked out, my pension contribution from the company had been dropped and I was quite plainly told that I would not get a bonus or payrise for the 2nd year running, and I should be thankful I have a job.

However now, I have a new boss that started the 1st December, and she is the best boss I have ever had... she takes the mick out of the high turn over in her role and you can see she wants to change things. Something none of the others have had the balls to do. She asks me how I am each day in terms of work, and if I look like I'm feeling down she will pull me into her office to ask what's wrong.

I know that her office whatever I say in there stays in there. She understands that a member of our team is taking the pi$$ with the flex hours (which we are not meant to have) and is slowing building a case. She can see the company is about the directors own pockets and that there is nothing for the general staff.

Whilst I know its going to be a battle with what she hopes to do... I can also see that what she wants to do will really change this place.

Retirement for me is being in the fortunate position of having saved/invested enough money to no longer have to work. (this does not include being lazy at 18, having 3 kids, being given a free house and never having to work)

Years away for me sadly.
