I loitered near someone trying to do a deal on a brand new Suzuki last year, he asked the dealer to throw in a free tankpad (nothing else), the salesman said he'd go and ask. I followed quickly (sad) and heard him ask the sales manager and he begrudgingly said yes, all over a tankpad! Some dealers wiggle more than others I guess!

if they want to stay in business and sell you a bike then they should be more than happy to take your old bike off you haggling depends on how they're doing this month/is it the end or start of the month/if they're financially comfortable enough to budge on price etc...

Padgetts at batley have offered me about 50% under market value on two of my bikes and have seriously over priced bikes most of the time. When he started calling me a dreamer I said I'd pop back later in the week and left quietly

Yeah the 10% rule is always a good starting point, i.e. if a bike is priced at £3000, expect to be able to bring them down to £2700/£2750, but it swings both ways = if you expect them to knock a wedge off the ticket price then they'll maybe want to knock a little bit off the value of your part ex...

I usually get straight to the point "look mate we could mess around all day seeing who's gonna meet who half way, I've got my bike and enough cash to top this deal up to work out at £2700 for your bike at £3k, if you wanna do a deal, let's sit down and get it done 'cos my missus is making shepherds pie & tira mi su tonight, don't wanna be late"

I haggled me new SV down to the price the dealer bought the bike in at, cause i asked whats the cheapest they could do, and i did me research before and knew where i stood with me prices. Plus I got a free alarm, and other accessories, cause i asked.
so yeah "dont ask. dont get"

well it worked for me but maybe not the tiramsu bit.

However, one trick that did work, was something a mate in the trade told me. Offer them the silly price you wanna knock em down to, then when they um and arrrr and won't budge, tell em you'll leave them to have a think, go and sit in Mc Donalds for a while having a lard burger and coffee, then go back and tell em you are going to get a deal done, and see if they will budge some more, no doubt they will, its all about playing the game.

When I was looking for a new bike my P/x difference between two dealer was £500, one offered £2500 the other offered £3000.

One was against a triumph 675, they offered £3000 and would not budge, the price of the bike was also over priced and they would not budge on that either. I was £300 off being happy to do the deal there and then on Masters Ltd 675 like Ed's but they would only do the deal on a manky gold coloured one.

On the other hand I got offered £2500 at another dealer against a very competitively priced pre reg 600rr. They deal was already good but I haggled and went upto £2750 for my SV, and the deal was done.

I guess some will and some wont... and how much they will, will depend on each bike individually.

Shop around, and do haggle, and do be prepared to walk away.

And don't rule out travelling a reasonable distance. I'd rather travel 200 miles for the right deal than be unhappy with something 5 miles down the road. Put another way, 200 miles is only 3 hours.

Might be worth PM'ing Lozzo. He works for a Kawasaki dealer.

I am more than happy to travel, its just you have to KNOW the bike is as good as they say it is, and I cant say I 100% trust a dealer
