Unless guy who owns it now, insures it and taxes it online on DVLA site. Even then you can not ride the bike until the disc comes through, think it takes 5 days.
Sorry, but why are you posting complete supposition as fact?
I know for a fact that you can ride the bike if it has been taxed you do not need to wait for it to arrive in the post. And other people have said about a V62 form to tax it - I don't know about this, but I don't see the benefit of posting that he will not be able to tax the bike.

"If you use the electronic vehicle licensing service or tax by post at the end of the month, there’s now an exemption for not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month to allow time for the new disc to arrive in the post. While you are still waiting for your tax disc you will need to display your current tax disc. The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires."

I quote the DVLA.

However I stand corrected on the V62 issue.....well I never knew that!

Link to V62, just print and take it in:

The way I read the notes of the v62 form (part F) is that only the current keeper can tax the bike without a v5 present as long as no details have changed and he has an MOT cert + insurance valid.

So as long as he has valid insurance on it still...

Quote:
If you are already recorded as the registered keeper of the vehicle,
you can tax your vehicle at a DVLA local offi ce by using this form and
the following documents.
• ‘Application for a tax disc’ (V10) or ‘Application to tax a Heavy
Goods Vehicle’ (HGV) (V85) form.
• Your insurance certifi cate and MoT certifi cate if you need one for
your vehicle (must be valid on the date the tax disc starts).

Taken from the V62 form
Quote:
If you are not the registered keeper, and you do not have a V5C/2,
you will not be able to tax the vehicle until you receive a V5C in
your name. Until then you cannot tax the vehicle and therefore you
must make a Statutory Off Road Notifi cation (SORN).

You cannot use this form to tax your vehicle at Post Offi ceŽ branches.
Therefore you will need the current owner to buy the tax disc before he sells it to you, so he will have to have insurance in his name.

Can anyone confirm that the normal process of sending off parts of the V5 can be done via letter to DLVA or by any other means?

Or perhaps (assuming he has insurance still) he could tax it, and then I could submit a v62 myself saying that I have not received my new V5 in the post (lets pretend the slip I sent off got lost in the post)

I believe, and it is only a belief, that if the guy you a buying it from writes to the DVLA stating that he lost the V5 but is no longer the registered keeper as of blah de blah date and that he transferred ownership to yourself of address xxx, and you apply for the V5 via necessary form, all bases will be covered.

Someone's going to need to send in a V62 - doubt you would get away with both of you just sending letters

You're going to really have to trust him because he'll be buying the tax by sending in a V62, so you will have no paperwork (except a receipt + the bike + the keys, which as you say you trust him & have an HPI, should be OK

Don't think you need to send in a V62 as well as long as he forward the V5 on to you when he gets it or submits it to the DVLA a bike sold.
So you would just fill one in if he does not do this.

I guess a call to the DVLA in the morning should resolve this once and for all...

Fingers crossed and all...
