I think you will find that is the 2005 on tensioner with oil feed. Obviously I need to investigate further, but thanks for your input.

I don't think I will find that.

Look at tensioners, you see body of 1gen is round held together with circlip? Rotating mechanism to give linear feed yes?

Now look at 2gen one, flattened in section with pin through section (red line in pic) for ratchet pawl to pivot. Completely different, it is not just an addition of a part to the original tensioner.
I say again, completely linear motion... there is nothing rotating in there. Spring pushes direct on plunger rather than having thread inside to translate rotary motion of spring to linear.

Edit: that is an 03 tensioner NOT an 05 one with oil feed.

I think you will find this if you try do valve clearance on a pointy of 03-04 flavour. Thanks.

Thanks again Chris. You are spot on I have been stupid enough to look at the drawing in parts fiches and expect them to be accurate The lazy ****'s at Suzuki couldn't be botherd to re-draw for 2003-2004 model tensioner (the main body assembly remains the same in the parts drawing) and just showed the spring, bolt and new gasket! At least you've stopped me heading of down a blind alley - thanks again.

The 2003 one is indeed nothing like the original one. Thanks to a bit of advice from YC i swapped them on my 99 bike for the 2003 ones, direct replacment but you need the complete thing inc. end plug (honestly), and now it doesn't rattle. Well worth it.
