It's not just a case of having to tell the other insurer - you'll get docked some of the no claims as well, even though it was nothing to do with the other policy.

It's a complete scam.

A complete scam indeed. I've insured myself on a PUG 106 D. First car insurance I've had for many years. I had to include my fault accident I had on my bike but they wouldn't include the 3 years no claims I still have remaining from riding bikes.

Double scam.

Grrr.

Direct Line will allow you to use bike earned no claims on a car.

Largely thanks to a beer I bought the assistant motor underwriter a few years ago when I started in the claims depatment here. (I knew him from my previous insurer).

I've used my bike no claims when I got a car - they asked if I had any unused no claims and I said yes. They didn't ask what for and I didn't tell them! My sister did the same

Seems reasonable that you can't use it car to bike, but bike to car seem silly - if you can stay shiny side up for a year on a bike you can drive a cage no probs.

That indeed was the very logic I used. I said it identified a driver that has had additional, recent training, and to earn ncd on a bike being harder than a car, suggested a flattening of risk factors.

So indirectly, I hope I have saved hundreds of thousands of pounds to bikers over the years, and any of you are of course, totally free to buy me a pint.

Basically, any bike NCD you earn doesn't count when you go for car insurance.

BUT if you call the insurance companies direct when applying for quotes, I've found that some take your bike NCD into consideration, and might give you an introductory bonus, but others refuse. Why i don't know..

As others have said, being a biker and having 3 or maybe more years NCD should make you a lower risk, seeing as you can control a dangerous machine which requires way more skill levels than driving a car.

You could train a chimpanzee to drive a car these days, its that easy..
The standards for a car driver to pass a test nowadays is just a joke - they even cancel your practical test these days just because "the weather is too bad". How are people supposed to learn how to drive in adverse weather??
Car drivers nowadays with full licences aren't able to cope, and lane discipline!!! Don't even get me started on these bunches of useless arrogant dicks who think they can sit at 50 in lane 2 in a 70 zone when lane 1 is empty, and won't move over....

Do they actually recognise a full six year NCD and credit you with it just like a car NCD or do they give you an "introductory discount"which disappears a year later come renewal?

Just thought I would re-surface this old thread and add my recent experience with Motorbike NCD on a Car Policy...

I recently bought a new car and without thinking put down that I had a years NCD (this was earned on a little 50CC Ped about 2/3 years ago) After I had done this I started panicking about it not being accepted, etc. The insurance company requesting the Certificate of NCD which I wearily sent them... I then received an email saying that everything was sorted and that it had all gone through!

So it would seem that by Motorbike NCD was indeed accepted and put onto my Cars policy. Just thought I would post this incase anyone is thinking about getting a car / is going through this at the moment..

By The Way.. The insurance company was Admiral.

Not quite sure how you got away with that regarless of the fact you transfered no claims from a bike to a car. As far as I am aware, if you do not renew your insurance within a year (might be 18 months) of expiry, you automatically lose those no claims. You say you claimed no claims from 2/3 years ago?

i would double check that with admiral, i had an astra gte insured through them years ago and sent them my proof of no claims as requested, they then got in touch to tell me that they hadn't received them, so i gave them the name of my previous insurer so they could check themselves and sent them a second copy of my no claims ( all was legitimate), after about 2 months i received a letter telling me that my policy had been cancelled 3 weeks earlier due to not receiving my no claims. Not only did i lose money but they were unprepared to look into the matter and worst of all i had been driving around without insurance for 3 weeks without knowing!!!!!!
I won't ever be trying to insure myself with admiral again!!!!
