Showing my local prejudices and influences (aka ignorance) again.

Considered varmints here in the Appalachians, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermin
although in prized in the eastern part of the state (Virginia) for "English Foxhunting" which is of course fox hunting on horseback as you know it.

We have no urban foxes here (not of the four legged variety) excepting a possible stray. And ones that kill cats and dogs (or don't flee from humans) nearly always have rabies.

Even though they are a protected species here, (hunting laws) like snakes (most of which are poisionous) they are truely despised here and the saying is "The only good one is a dead one" .
Most in this part of the countryside, farmer or not, will kill one if it's seen around their property.

Besides I like cats.

They are considered a verminous pest here too, but are not hated to the same extent in urban areas as say rats and pigeons, mainly because they are very shy and the most common way to see one is to come across them in the car during the night or very early morning, if you are walking they are generally aware of you and have disappeared long before you have seen them. If people don't generally come into contact with them, or suffer any consequence of them being there, then they don't see the need to eradicate them as a pest. In fact many people (perhaps inadvisedly) leave food out for them.

There is evidence that they are getting bolder though, a fox killed an unattended baby not so long ago, but I think that was a first time ever.

Cats do my bloody head in. I can't stand them killing stuff when they're already well fed, or the fact that owners just let them run wild... if it's your pet then keep it under control. Or I'll get a doberman and bring it round your garden and see how you f***in like it.

Alternatively I've half a mind to start trapping them.

Well chris I won't post on here what I'd do if I caught somebody doing that to a pet of mine.
These are not wild animals they are peoples pets, dogs, cats, rabbits etc how would you feel if your pet was killed by someone ? You'd be p155ed as much as I would.

Aside from YC's war against foxes and cats

It's just nature. Cats kill everything smaller than them. Jack Russell's kill rats. Dogs chase cats, etc, etc. If my dog cornered a cat in my garden and killed it I'd feel very sorry for the owner, and I'd buy them a new cat and pay all the vets bills, but I wouldn't punish the dog. Just a fact of life folks, never going to change it.
