So the maintainance/insurance is already there.

The insurance would probably be cheaper if you add it to an existing bike policy anyway.

Theres always the option of selling both the car and the sv and getting a VFR or GS etc...
Agreed, but if the run is all of 20 miles then why not the SV650S...and save a lot on no car or other bike...

Like the idea of a VFR or similar (shaft drive maybe) or as edited in my above post what about a riser bar kit for the sv the OP has already?

As a tool I would consider a Maxi scooter, either the Burgman

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...es?logcode=flp

or a silverwing

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...91bn?logcode=p

Very comfortable, good visibility, excellent weather protection, low body maintenance, good storage, decent residuals, brisk enough etc etc...

My FIL has a '09 silverwing and my instructor had x2 '01 silverwings one of which has over 100k miles and is still going strong. It has even been stolen and recovered twice and found in a stream the second time. He never really services it properly as and when it 'feels' like it needs one it goes in and still it strides on...

Dullsville. Had one myself as a winter hack. It gets you to and from work, it still stops you getting stuck in traffic. It's shaft drive (virtually no maintenance). Has built in panniers for your sandwiches and work clothes. Does over 200 miles on a tank easy, tyres last for ever. Has good protection and if you get one with a touring screen, no wind blast at all. Has a rock solid engine. Get a topbox for it and your good to go.

I've gone to distant meetings on it. Had my suit in the topbox and other bits and pieces in the panniers (shoes n'stuff). Did a quick change in the carpark when I got there. All my bike gear went in the panniers and topbox and no one would have known I had just driven a motorcycle there.

Another satisfied Deau owner here. No ball of fire but a lot better than some journos would have you believe. Only one or 2 slight niggles to watch out for, but broadly speaking they're bomb-proof. A couple of couriers on the owners' forum have had 3 or more of them doing 150k hard use.

You can pick up very tidy 650 (carb) versions for a couple of k, 3k will get you a nice 700 (FI+ABS).
