i think everyone has a bit of local slang which is ok if you stay in the same area all your life.
When i moved to Englandshire with my present job i had to start pronouncing my words properly as i was used to the slang i always used at home. When i first came back home after about 3 months my mates mum said i had turned very English!!!! wasn't happy with that. Everyone at work could always tell when i had been home and been out drinking with my friends back home as the slang always started again on my return to Englandshire. My kids are now picking up a wee bit of a Scottish accent which i am very happy about but not too sure if my English wife is!!! i hate text speak as it takes me far too long to try and work out what someone is trying to say, same with some of Mabozza's posts it takes a while to read, but that is probably because i am getting old now!!!!

the weirdest i have ever come across is lalanders (borders) its like a cross between gaelic and english with a bit of feck knows what just to even confuse the part of your brain that was trying to decipher what they were saying. thankfully it is dying out with the very old ones.

Shame IMO, there's dialect all over Scotland that's dying out with the old folk. I love the way my grandparents spoke.
My gran & grandad were always using stuff like simmit, baffies, the morn's nicht, scunner, mince n' champit tatties, peely wally, skinny malink "Get in that bathroom and scrub ahent yer clatty lugs!" "Git back in that hoose the noo wi yer clatty feet! It's cauld n' drookit oot here. Ye'll catch yer death gaun out n' the gaerden barefit!" When we were little my gran used to sing "Aye, gee up ma cuddy, ma cuddy's ower the dyke, dinnie ye touch ma cuddy, or ma cuddy'll gie ye a bite" My mum sings it to my son now. ![]() |
