With grinding - is it a case getting as close to the shaft as possible on one side or two sides? Then drift off the remains?

Guess what I'm fighting with at the moment

Yeah just grind away until it frees off. It is a bit of a git. One side usually does it, if you touch the shaft it probably won't hurt too much so long as you don't weigh into it and take half the threads off

Right then, it gets one more go with heat / freeze / rattlegun / breaker bar then the grinder is joining the party

Join the club !! I managed to change mine on Monday this week, 1/2 inch drive socket on a bar with a 5foot jack handle slipped over .
Tried twice and was starting to lift bike off stand despite mate sat on it holding brake on. I had one final try and there was a loud crack and off it came. Scary really. but now have new sprokets and chain.

Why people see the need to do them up so tight amazes me ?!?!?
