Have you put a block under the tyre so the weight of the swingarm and tyre isn't being held by the shock? That's what I forgot when I did mine and I experienced the same situation.

You still need to lift the wheel and swinging arm up as the weight of these is resting on the bolt. Can you get a trolley jack under them or someone to lift them whilst you wiggle the bolt out?

If you are looking at the bike from the back..which side of the shock is the head of the bolt on?

Yorkie: I'll take a pic when I can next get to the bike.

Darren: I don't think I can!

Christian/Taipan: I've already undone the linkage bolt, at which point the wheel fell. I thought at that point the weight was off the shock and linkage. If not I'll wedge some more stuff under the tyre and see if I can make it easier.

Mr Speirs: It's on the left.

Thanks for all the responses.

Mister C: Thanks for that, it confirms I'm trying to shift the right thing, at least. I feel a bit of a fool for not finding that thread on my own.

Photos as requested:

I've tried propping up the wheel and it made no difference whatsoever - there doesn't seem to be any weight on the suspension.

Agh! Apologies for the giant photos! Have to run off now but I'll edit them down in size later.

And there was a nut on the end of that?

Have you tried unscrewing that bolt? (as said earlier the shock mount is threaded).

If it just turns and turns but doesn't come out then maybe the previous owner has threaded the bolt and then just stuck a nut on the end. Try putting pressure on the right side of the bolt while undoing it from the left.

You could undo the other bolt for the linkage and whip the shock and linkage out together to get a better look at it/attack it with power tools.

If you let swingarm drop then it rests on shock or linkage and still loads that bolt up to make life hard, put a brick or something under wheel to rest it on, just high enough to take weight.

That "nut" is actually meant to be welded to shock, but meh, if it is free spinning then do thing with brick as above then apply hammer and drift. Few hits then see if it has bitten and wind out. It will move.

I would take shock and linkage out and work on whole lump in vice.
