Loving that DR350 project Badger. Many hours spent on that. Way more effort that I could summon, so maximum respect.

@Ralph, I totally get where you're coming from, but what I'm after is something I can get home covered in crap, hose down, let it drip dry, WD40 it a bit, then stick it in the garage until it next gets used. Then every 6 months, change some fluids, filters and plugs, check the brakes, make sure the shocks aren't leaking or anything, then forget about it (you know, a couple of hours work). I don't mind working on bikes, but I wouldn't say I enjoy it, so the idea of having to do anything with the engine on a routine basis is a bit too much for me.

Also I'll be giving my mate some suggestions and he is worse than me. He only worked on his KTM when I kicked him up the **** or when it blew up, and I ended up doing half of it. So he needs something that will basically run and run with the occasional begrudging small service from a lazy git.

WR250R. 6000 mile or 1 year service intervals. Not ridden a WR but it should be lightweight, easy to handle and great fun. It will need revs from time to time being only 23bhp, but that's part of the fun too.

Or get a DRZ400 and stick some knobbly rubber on it.

Case closed. Next?

Sounds like the WR is the safe bet to me

I am also toying with a second bike for green laning without the headache of stupid amounts of maintenance, I keep coming back to the WR250R...

I have a KTM as a main bike and love it to bits but even then I am not all that tempted into a 250-450 sized KTM exc-f etc. Only when you get to the 690cc engines onwards do the service intervals become bearable for me....the 690 enduro is gorgeous but lots of cash and way overkill

edit: been following this guys vlogs for the last year (you should subscribe!)...he rides a WR250 and this vid talks through it a little:

Well, that ok then. Why didn't you say so??! No sounds good mate. I like ringing a bike's neck too. Braaap braaap and all that. Plus I like the idea of a 250 so it's nice and light.

Short list is so far a DRZ400 or a WR250 then. The problem with doing all this thinking now is it draws me to ebay and looking at bikes I can't buy for a long time yet.

Not sure but the WR250 is quoted to get about 70mpg (standard kit), needs to though with just 8 litres in the tank

God knows how much i spent on it gave up keeping count as it was easier to just assume i was rich

Although if you got the right one for a good price all that would need doing is a quick clean up of a few pieces, fork oil and lots of grease in the right places.
maybe a airbox mod and bigger jets and you could have it going as good as mine in a few days.
But im anal so it took me months.

It depends on mods and how it is ridden, but mid to high 20's kpl is within reach for a stock bike. Typically they run low to mid 20's kpl.
