Are you not restricted to 33bhp for two years after your test pass (September 2011 when you got the SV)?

Your 18, couldn't ride a 125 and do a test until at least your 17th birthday, so you're restricted until some point after your 19th birthday (September 2013)?

You do realise that a restricted ZX6R will be probably be slower than a restricted SV right?

SV650S 47.2 lbf·ft (64.0 N·m) @ 7000 rpm
ZX6R 42.9 lb·ft (58.2 N·m) @ 12,000 rpm

Why does he need a reason to buy a sports 600? At 18 years old the only reason he needs is "because I want to". Hardly any of the people I know can ride an SV650 to its fullest extent, but that didn't stop them upgrading to GSXRs and 675 Daytonas - the lad's age doesn't matter, he can afford it and he wants it, that's all the excuse he needs.

Try MCE, they will insure younger people on 600s in my experience, H+R will also.

He might want to.
The (insurance ) Computer says No.

Most problems can be fixed by chucking large sums of money at them.
If he can afford it then its up to him ultimately.

You ever thought of selling motorbikes, oh wait...

As you say, his want, his money, I was only expressing that there are things that I wished that I had waited on rather than rush into as a brash youth

There are also things that I wish I had done that I didnt - like get my bike license.

Regarding the insurance, it is very hard to get any money back if you have less than 6 months left to run because they make up all sorts of charges on it basically to make you give up trying.

I'm 18 years old, been riding since my 16th birthday continuously, on a 50cc, 125cc then a SV650S K3 since september. In total i've been riding for nearly 2 years and a half years. Insurance for me was £503 on the SV TPFT. I'm looking to upgrade (or downgrade depending on how you look at it) to a '09 ZX6R. I've got a very reasonable finance deal waiting for me so I went and got quotes....

.....Cutting it short, I edited a previous quote just changing the bike and adding security items. No quotes from GoCompare, MCN, Carol Nash and my current insurer eBike.

I then changed from Student to Technical Engineer in Medical Research (what i will be doing in the next month or so) and still nothing. Changed mileage, policy cover, and just about everything else... Am I doing something wrong or can I just simply not get insurance for that bike at my age?

Thank you if you can help, I really want this bike !!
I've had my bike 2 years now, (2001 SV650S) I am insured with Express Insurance (or something of a similar name) I only pay £400 Fully comp, due for renewal this month sometime. Compared is via whichever site, and this time it'll only cost me £320.

I'm 22 by the way.

Could be to do with the area you live, and a multitude of factors.

Thanks to all the replies, I've been busy and unable to reply sooner...

Basically, the restrictors may have been off the bike for some time and I have gotten to nearly the full extent of the bikes capabilities. I trail brake deep into corners I know well and understand what the limitations are of the bike. It's a sweet handling machine but needs improving. I know that there are many things i could do to it to make it handle better than the ninja but why go through the hassle and expense when the bike will still be worth about the same at the end?

Reasons for changing:
- As I said above I feel I'm being held back by the capabilities of my SV
- I want a smoother engine (I4) because I do a fair few motorway miles and get off my bike with white finger
- I need better MPG as I use the bike every day of every week
- I need the bike to be reliable in the rain
- As with all young people i get bored fairly quickly and just fancy a change...

Of all the places I have tried (all comparison sites, carol nash, A-Plan, MCE, Bennetts etc) only 3 people would insure me and the quote were over £9000.

I have since decided to become wise and invest £200 a month into a Cash ISA and save up the cash in time for when I am old enough to get insurance for the 600. Until then I will continue to put the miles on my SV. 12,000 since september =)
