Hi guys, sorry it's been a while getting round to this but it's been a nightmare coupe of months.
Ok then, I have checked the battery voltages and they are as follows: Battery engine off = 12.76V (just after optimate removed) Idle - Dipped headlights only = 14.60V 5000rpm - Dipped headlights only = 14.63V Idle - Full Beam = 14.60V 5000rpm - Full Beam = 14.64V Is this ok or too high? Bike was cold, just started, don't know if that makes a difference. Haven't taken the bike out for a spin since as I didn't want to mess anything up. Should I take it out and see if the smell returns? Cheers, Matt. |

From those results I don't think I've seen a better SV charging system! I doubt that the regulator/rectifier specifically is the problem you have, (although its connectors may be - see below).
How old is the battery? Is it in good condition? Did you measure the battery voltage immediately after disconnecting from the charger? If yes, it will not have given you a true picture of the battery's ability to hold charge. If the battery is duffed then it may get hot when charged, which is one possible cause of the heat/smell you experienced, but it's more likely, I suspect, that you have a problem with connections, specifically that poor connections cause high resistances and heat. It is a tedious process, but I think it would be worthwhile to remove the tank and bodywork etc, and have a very thorough check to see if you can find any melted, burnt or otherwise heat damaged wiring or connections.

Got a similar problem on my K7 650S - just without the burning.
With fully charged battery, bike started no problem. After a 30min ride bike started to mis-fire, then cut-out and wouldn't restart. AA guy got it started again but only read about 8.5V on battery and still misfiring. Recovery guy suggested it could be R/R or Generator rather than the battery. Bike has a Meta fitted and tends to go unused for long periods... and has been know to go without a CTEK trickle-charger attached... so I decided to replace the OEM battery with a gel equivalent. Fully charged the bike started first time and voltages all reading about 13.5v. I left it running (idle and <5000rpm) for about 15-20 minutes and the voltages had already started to fall to about 11.5V. Seems the battery isn't being replenished and power is being drained to keep engine running? I don't detect any current drain from the battery. I haven't taken the fairings of yet to check R/R and generator properly, but peering round, all the wiring I can see all looks in good condition. Maybe a bit premature without check further, but has anyone else experienced this? What was the solution? |
