You can get very neat tankbags, you'll be surprised how 'out of the way' they are. If that's your only concern I'd suggest checking a few out, ask the dealer if you can test it on your bike. Most are expandable also.

There are good reasons for using a tankbag
it's contained within the wheelbase of the bike, and not too high - it's difficult to think of a better place to put additional luggage.
You can see it ! - if it starts to come loose, you'll know very quickly.
The SV's tank is steel, so it just attaches with magnets (Baglux is better)
You can put a map etc in the top pocket so it's visible on your journey.
It's unlikely to injure you in an accident.

I know one rider who was knocked off his bike and was promptly clobbered by his top-box. His ED Dr told him he was 'lucky' to escape permanent injury to his back.
Plus you'll keep wondering what's trying to overtake you if you fit a topbox.

Trust me, a tank bag does not come between you and the controls....

Try one you'll see that if does not interfere with your riding at all...

Oh all right if I must. A nice big topbox may look a bit naff but it is more comfortable than a backpack and does offer some security when you are away from the bike. However when you are on the bike you can't see it, so you can pretend it doesn't exist. Panniers are actually better from the handling point of view as they keep any weight lower and don't have as much aerodynamic effect.

Seriously if like a lot of people you are mostly concerned about image and aesthetics don't get one. If on the other hand like me you regard the bike as much as a practical means of transport as a recreation you may think the topbox/panniers worth the compromise.

I think it all comes down to confidence and self esteem really. The peeple here who rant on about how ugly they are etc etc are all so insecure that they actually care what people say about them. Me? I couldn't give a toss.

No, you don't have to.

There are understatements and then there are understatements.

Please don't tell me you've started wearing it too?

I would, trust me.

Yes I'd completely lose mine if I had a t****x.

I am not ugly (forget the rumours).

(I think that's what might be termed "post abuse" )

dont listen to them all. A topbox and hard panniers are a must for every bike.

just because I would never fit them to mine has nothing to do with it

As I think I'm the only one on the forum with the Suzuki top box I'll have to add my 2p worth.

Pros
It holds loads
It is secure mounting wise and theif wise
+ all the other general top case pros
It doesn't look as bad as some others

Cons
It's expensive
It bolts (4) onto the pillion seat mounts (no accessible underseat storage)
You can't swing your leg over, you have to step over the seat to get on
They *may* be a problem with the bracket but being dealt with by Suzuki hopefully as we speak

All in all, for touring (why I got it) it was great, but for everyday use I use a tankbag and/or a good comfy rucksac.

I've got an Oxford sports tail bag and its great. I switch between that on the rear seat and just having a seat cowel.

Sorry but those are not rumours, I told you before, you don't have to be scared of the mirror, just expect the worse and you will be fine
