All Suzuki's require the clutch leaver to be pulled in to start the bike. Its a safety feature, if it does not work it just means that someone has 'crossed' the wires in the switch on the underside of the leaver, anyone can do it all you need is some tin foil.

As for you side stand sounds like the neutral sensor switch has died 2.
Have a look though these.. I'm sure their is something:

Sounds like you have a fualty switch and nothing more. Give it a clean and make sure that its getting full downward movement etc. Its probably just not hitting the contacts at the bootom of the switch.

You probably have the wrong switch, as you said it is not an original one.

There are two switch operation modes. Press to disconnect & Press to connect.

I seems that you have the wrong one and the operation of the side stand is the wrong way arround. On some switches you and change the wire contact to change the operation mode.

As far as i am aware, most bikes can be started in gear with the clutch in, but not with the side stand down.

Think about it stalled at the lights you cannot get the bike in gear now, clutch in and start and go. If you put the side stand down it could be very horible.

On a K4:
The clutch needs to be pulled in to start the engine. It dosen't matter if it is in gear or not.
The bike will cut out or not start if the sidestand is down AND the bike is in gear. It dosen't matter if the clutch is in or not.

I'd disable the clutch switch and see what happens once that's out of the loop.

Id leave it as is, If should the worst happen and your bike gets nicked, they'll just think its a dud and dump it, which means you'll get it back
