I tend to move from lane to lane looking for gaps in middle or outside lanes to pass either side accordingly. Its interesting as this was in my mind at the weekned as I was travelling on the motroways a lot and feel perhaps I do it too much.
I was also the victim of an enraged driver who despite the traffic moving in lanes objected to me passing on his inside and moving back in front of him and who decided to try and have me off.

I honestly don't believe it's different to any other manoeuvre. Provided you're confident of the situation and take due care, then it's no different to passing a vehicle on the inside when their lane is going slower than yours.

It should only be carried out on the clinically dead and by bona-fide Funeral Directors.

And because of this, in most US states it is completely legal.

It's also okayed in the Highway Code in a one way system, so how is that any different?

Would you class a dual carriageway as a one way system since you have no access to the opposite direction?

An interesting point. For all intents and purposes I'd have to say yes, though I think you'd lose on a point of law.
