...and check with your insurance company that they will give you "foreign use extension" which gives you the full cover abroad, otherwise you'll only have the legal minimum.

For Spain I'm pretty sure you still need a "bail bond" for when you get locked up , think that's also from your insurance company (I've not driven in Spain!).

..and an up to date E111 from the Post Office (at least that's free!)

Indeed. Some companies require you to list countries and they you are fully comp as over here. Some dont...but its worth the price of a phone call. Sometimes the bail bond thing is listed on your certificate.
