Like others have said - killswitch or sidestand cutout switch are the most likely culprits.

I had a low battery and the lights still came on, there wasn't enough oomph left in the battery to turn the starter - bumped her - no problems afterwards.

Mr Toad had the answer, rocked it back and fourth in gear and she started, starter motor was jammed....i'll remember that one!

For future reference another solution to these symptoms (although it's a different proble, that causes them and I don't think this would fix a stuck starter) is to disconnect the battery, turn the key to "on", if the dash lights come on, wait till they go off to discharge the capacitors. Then reconnect the battery and retry.

This has solved electrical gremlins that have manifested themselves in my bike twice after rain.

Of course it could be something else such as a loose connection, or a wire chafing on something, but I'm happy to take the credit

To be honest as I went back to the bike I did think, please dont be the killswitch lol that would of been embarassing! But hands down it was the starter motor....
