thanks again for the help, i don't think i will be buying new though so unfortunately can't use said discount...just want the cheapest way possible to hold the rear in the air so i can turn the wheel!

Use a strap around the front brake lever to hold it on full. Turn steering to left. Kneel down next to RHS of bike. Push up on the tank - this will bring the rear up in the air. Put a hammer or simialr length strong item between the rear of the swinging arm and the ground. This will hold the bike plently steady enough to clean the chain etc.... |

hmmm good point that could work actually....how steady though? if a paddock stand is available second hand for < £10 i presume that's worth it?
