The icing in 'carb icing' occurrs in the carb throat because of the drop in temperature at the venturi. Hence, no venturi = no carb icing.
Blimey, applied some silicon grease and now I think I'm Northwind... |

![]() ![]() Yeah, it's all about air speeds and pressure differences, I don't believe the SV injection would have the sort of fieece contrasts needed to cause carb icing. Don't have teh foggiest idea what is causing it though.

I'd say "Carb icing" or the equivelent is not the problem. Start with the basics and work up:
1) What sort of speed does the engine idle at normally when warm? 2) Does the air filter look ok? 3) Are the plugs black as night? While you're checking the spark plugs make sure the area around the front plug is clean, the drain hole is draining and a smear of silicone grease round the plug cap wouldn't hurt (Though as you say if it's happening in the dry and only under these conditions the front plug isn't the prime suspect) ![]()

My friends V-strom has this same trouble. He really hammers it down the motorway then when he returns to a more normal speed (.e off the motorway) his bike just wants to die on him. The local Suzuki Garage reckons that it might be the ECU need to be remapped to compensate for the high mileage his bike has done. They recommend bringing it in (no supprises there) but they're intnding to put it on their Dyno and simulate the exact problem with all their dianostic equipment pluged into it. He's not intending to do it just yet but i'll ask him when it gets done.

Dyno run: £70 Minimum... ECU Re-map: £30... Having a garage that actually knows what they are doing... Pricless! For everything else, there's credit card bashing (unless it is under warranty ![]() ![]() ![]() Alternatively, fit a front fender extender: £17.99 Remove, clean & grease the front spark plug with non-conductive heat-proof grease, then re-fit... Same effect is achieved without bashing credit card ![]() Well worth a try first without shelling out loads of cash IMHO ![]() |

Check the thermostat is working correctly. If it isn't the engine could be be being allowed to cool to much and the FI not adjusting to this (as in a cold start/choke - I know there isn't s choke as such on FI but the ECU should be applying the same principle). I believe that there is a temp gauge on the pointy so make a note the temp of the engine when you come off the dual carriage way. I would expect the temp to be around 95 C + but some pointy owners might be able to give you some better advice on running temps. If the temp is being allowed to drop a lot lower than this it would point to the thermostat not working correctly.
This is just an idea as it sounds very similar to an issue I had with a car I owned but it is worth checking as it's easy to do. |

Mine used to run between 79 and 85 at ateady speed on the motorway. If the thermostat's working you will see temp build gradually to the higher figure then drop to the lower quite quickly.

On a car I would say this was a coil issue. These can play up when they get hot, explaining why it only manifests when you've been riding it a while. Not sure how this translates to bike though and difficult to test easily without swapping it out.
