Re: Trackday project K3
So more fears confirmed tonight, after I discovered that the new forks weren't going straight in the yokes, I use the old bent fork to lever the bottom yoke a bit straighter, enough to fit the new forks and see where any further issues were.
As you can see the bottom yoke is rather fubar'd: If you have one lying around looking for a new home, give me a shout please!! Cheers!

Trackday project K3
I think I have one in the garage. You know you'll need to redo the bearings right?

Re: Trackday project K3
With the stem / bottom yoke arriving on friday, I set to with the swap today.
Praise be to the ABBA stand, I fixed it to the holes in the frame that I removed the bent crash bung bar from and used a few bricks to keep the front up: The new part was easy peasy to fit and I also used the bearings from the replacement just in case I had damaged the originals in the crash. I kept the races in the frame though. After which I regained some straightness: Next stage, is to fasten all the front bits back on, then rebuild the exhaust end can after I hammered the inlet back into shape. Looks like I can save the belly pan I was using with a little fibreglass and I sourced a new top half which will need a rub down and re-spray and re-sticker. All good fun!

Re: Trackday project K3
With the major jobs done (Assuming darley moor post out my key which was found in the paddock!), it was time to do the cosmetics bits.
I rubbed down and resprayed the seat, fibreglassed the mounts which had taken some damage, it just needs a re-drill and mounting. The exhaust hanger needs adjusting and a paint touch up. Then with the nice still, warm days over the weekend, I used my drive way as an open air spray booth. I had found some cheap replacement fairings to use instead of trying to patch up the original ones. (I'll maybe try to make something of them over winter) They had a nasty paint job on which I tried to rub off. So from the beaten up original: To the replacement: Not to bad considering its a rattle can job, it'll certainly do until the next time it makes a bee line for the gravel traps! The belly pan is in primer ready to finish if the sun holds out. Next trackday is booked for May 27th at Cadwell.

Re: Trackday project K3
I thought I'd better post up a picture of the bike after its mini-rebuild.
Considering the weather forecast is heavy rain all day for tomorrow, it may not stay looking like this for long!! I am actually looking forward to the challenge of wet weather riding on track. Its about time I faced my fears and see if I can set a reasonable pace. The screen is new, being a dubble bubble chinesey one but bought from a uk seller for £14 delivered. The yellow "fillets" on the tank are there to cover the gravel rash from Darley!! .

Re: Trackday project K3
So cadwell was not too bad in the wet, a few niggles from the rebuild but nothing major.
One issue was that I'd used some rivets that were too small on the bent exhaust. They gradually fell out during the trackday until eventually I noticed the bike got very loud. Oops! The body came away from the inlet piece and the wadding made a break for freedom on the back straight. So I figured I'd get a new one. Thanks to DanSp I got a nice shiny new viper can. Arrived today: So all set for Blyton Park this saturday and then I shall be entering the Oliver's mount hill climb in August. Something different and a good way to practice my starts!! .

Re: Trackday project K3
So blyton park went ok apart from a few idiots on track but I managed to avoid incidents (Had to take avoiding action at least twice) and came home in one piece.
However it was the first time I'd been back since raising the seat using the new subframe and I have a feeling it hasn't helped handling much. It is great for my legs which were aching after just one session before, but to regain some handling I decided to use some engineering in order to settle on a compromise: Before: After: So it doesn't look as good but hopefully it'll let me carry the speed in the corners better. Today I spent putting the bike into "Hill climb" mode. This included, removing the fairings and clocks. Pushing the clip ons out for a wider stance. I still have to come up with some number boards and drill the oil hose bolts for lock wiring.
