Seems to be a simple way to describe this, the curvy cams are mild, the K3> cams are a little hotter and the JHS one's are hotter than those.

So what part are we swapping then? As when I look ebay I get lots of results for a number of parts from the tensioner to the chain, is the whole lot needed or just one bit?

Plus is it a strip down to fit, or do I not even need to drop the oil, just pop off the heads?

Ever changed a valve shim? It's basically the same procedure. Just take the cylinder head cover off, tensioners out, put the new cams in facing the same direction as the old uns.

If I minded I would spend a lot of time minding

Yeah, I used the old K3/standard intake to ex side. The main difference is reason is price v performance- "proper" cams from megacycle or Kent or JHS might be better, but the K3 swap costs (well, costed when I did it) ?130 inc the camchain tensioner gaskets.

The JHS swap pressed onto standard camwheels cost about ?350 at the time, and was also exchange (ie, you had to send in your cams) which made it effectively about 3 times more expensive. Is it 3 times better? Nope... And also, still not adjustable, the degreeable camwheels added another ?300. If you were building a race bike for an open race class that might make sense, for a road bike... Nah, no thanks. You could spend that money better elsewhere. DD reckons the performance difference is pretty big obviously, but most people who've done an exact a/b comparison would disagree I think.

It's not hard to do, you should have no probs, when I did it I had essentially no clue I'd never seen a cam before. I spent ages reading all the internet guides, most of which make it look harder than it is- "Take out old cams, put new cams in where old cams were, don't **** up" is about it. Obviously the timing marks don't line up when you put the intake cams into the exhaust side, but the intakes do, so you can either add a mark or just do it by dead reckoning, ie measure chain links from a suitable mark on the intake side to a suitable landmark (the cam lobe) on the exhaust side).

Personally I kind of reckon it's the only performance mod for an SV that makes any sense It's quick, it's cheapish, it's fairly straightforward, it has no expensive/time consuming setup time- I certainly found it easier than jetting my bike, and far faster, it's more mechanically difficult but it's got less actual thinking.

Best thing to do, to get an idea, is just to take the rear cam cover off and have a look. The timing marks are wee arrows engraved on the actual cam sprockets, that basically show where they should go when the engine is at particular positions.
