I was taught that this is ok if you are not preloading the gearshift... So matching the revs and changing ok - preloading the lever and waiting for a change to happen will damage the gearbox as it puts a strain on the shift forks which are not desinged to the job.

Many articles about this in the net - as many opinions as there are arseh...

I'm sure the shift forks, which are mere steel will be severely stressed by my toe on the lever

(shift forks are probably 1/4" square, very little force on the lever, and the mechanism gives very little leverage anyway)

If you're a moron who boots the lever to death and makes the box go crunch then the dogs are likely to be damamged first.

Gear selector forks may well be made out of bronze alloy or a mixture of bronze and aluminium so can get damaged quite easily by brute force.

The actual part that slides the spinning shaft will probably have some anti friction material. When I was a lad it was like bakelite or coated copper.

This thread will go for months

Brute force is different to the slight amount of pressure you put on them when about to shift.

I reckon I use less force on the lever shifting without the the clutch than when using it.

I would invite you all out in my truck to show you exactly how matching mainshaft and layshaft speeds to engine speeds works without any force on the selectors. However my truck is fitted with a gearbox that doesnt have a clutch, actually it does but the engine computer actuates the clutch when the revs are exactly correct. It also actuates the gear selector at the same time.

I have one pedal to press to make it go and one to make it slow

So thats very similar to being automatic no?

Its a similar subject but at the same time different, does anyones bike fall out of 2nd gear back into neutral and to get it back in you have to crunch the gears a little

Does anyone know how quick shifters work then? Im pretty sure they work similar to the clutchless changes we do but that the ECU changes the revs for you? Just a guess...

Mine has fallen out of second a few times, it doesn't do it often so im convinced it was just me not shifting all the way.

The crunch when it goes back in is because the revs arent matched properly

Never done this on a big bike but used to do it a lot on my GT185 many many moons ago. Only did it then cos I was lazy. Just twisted the throttle and skipped up thru the box without backing off at all. Changing down was a bit messy though!

Only done for laziness - Can not see any point in doing it otherwise and run the risk of getting it wrong and shredding the cogs. Pointless exercise IMO
