Was told this about blondes once...........

you know why blondes dye their hair don't you?
because every time they use their brain, their roots start to show

I could have slapped em, but I was too busy howling with laughter....besides he was a very tall Russian bloke who does karate

+1. If it's about showing off, why do I drive such a battered old car? It's all about practicality. Cheap car than can carry lots of people/junk around. Bike is modified for hacking up and down the lengths of the country on a regular basis. It's not clean, nor is it scratch/dent/etc. free, but then it's not practical to keep a working bike clean (and if you do, it more than negates the time saving of using the bike over a car in the first place) and if I keep it looking mint, it'll only get scratched again soon.

I'd like a tidy, polished weekend toy of a bike, used only on sunny sunday afternoons, but at the moment, can't quite afford one and would prefer a tatty bike and tatty car to a tatty car and weekend toy bike, or no car, but 2 bikes, etc. When you're riding across the pendines in the snow, struggling to keep the bike upright, attracting the opposite sex comes way down the list.

As an aside, in my neck of the woods, girls are just as bad as boys for hideous, pointless and expensive car modifications and generally speaking, do it with even less taste than their male equivalents.

Im a real man, I ride with a topbox. Takes nerves of steel to do that.

Of course, if a girl did it, she'd be making her girly bike just more girly. A girls gotta stash her make up some place

Ok, serious now. I think all "drop-tops" are pretty stupid, and dont think anyone looks "cool" in them, come rain or shine. I also dont subscribe to the thing about blinging stuff up just to impress other people; I'll add something to my bike because I want to look at my bike and think "that part looks cool, glad I did that" (yes, that includes the topbox).

I would prefer another bike, one thats for pleasure and not commuting on. But thats not so I "fit in" with others, its so I have another bike to ride, something differant, faster, requireing differant skills/ more enchanced skills to ride. Itll be kept clean though, since there is no reason a bike ridden for pleasure should get that dirty. Hell, my workhorse of an SV isnt exactly dirty...is it jester

Some blokes are about looking cool. But girls are just the same, mostly with other things but also with bikes and cars etc etc

Girls get emotionally attached to their two wheels.......its a mechanical object my manly friend shouts. Ah but we do tastleful mods, and don't see it as a competition, we congratulate each other on our polishing skills, our not falling off...we might even give it some fluffy dice.

Ever noticed blokes do it with cars>?? yes there goes Mr testosterone with his Porsche, the one with the roof down in the rain....ooooooo laydeeez look how cool I am.......but if the girls get a car like that....ooo 'hairdresser mobeel'.
Does anyone have a pyshchological explanation to why the sexes act like this with the show of vehicles

My view of today was that blokes need to show they are the alpha male, so display these charactoristics...you know like birds do with feathers

My pet mechanic said......get in the sink and do the woman thing and make brews

So over to you lot to debate further
i reckon theres two explanations for it dizz, the insecure side like you say making people look at them and give them attention or just for the love of their bike making it sound nice when your riding it, basically doing it for yourself i think most people ive met on the org and on sports touring bikes seem to be less attention seeking, its just the tractor brigade at big ds on a tuesday nights that want to be thought of as cool and manly but in my oppinion ther all scruffy gits that couldnt take a corner on a roman road, lol
