As Pete says in his OP, going into a corner Im usually in the correct gear well before - and if I have to brake hard then Ive not used my forward obs enough - (that's what Ive been taught during advance training
![]() I had a convo about this subject with the 'ol man last night about it and he reckons he has always done the blipping thing naturally - I asked why and he mumbled something about "shoving more oil up the bores" !! so much for useful explanations ![]() ![]() |

People, a word of advice, it can come with a bit of practice, don't do what I have seen someone do, blip the throttle but either forget to apply the clutch or let the clutch out to early, it can give you the fright of your life apparently lol. I can blip my throttle for clutchless downchanges now but I have been known to get it wrong also.

I have done it since shortly after passing my test. My new bike doesn't have a slipper clutch but I still blip - makes for smoother gear changes and somehow seems more mechanically sound.
I had a zx6r for a while, which had a slipper clutch. I found that I had to REALLY push it to get the slipper to activate, I mean intentionally drop a gear or even two gears from pretty high revs and release the clutch quickly. Not the sort of thing I'd be doing on an everyday ride - more a spirited blast or on the track. However, I was blipping the throttle on gear changes still out of habit and it seemed to make changing more smooth. So even with a slipper I think I'd blip; if that makes sense? |

Ive just had a thought - is it the same as double de-clutching a car (like in the olden days!)

I have never found a problem with downchanging without blipping on either the ZX6R or my old SV, i dont see as it adds much purpose at all reall, as even if you change down two gears at high speed with a blip if you dont have a slipper clutch the rear will still lock up.
And as mentioned the slipper will sort that out for you if you have one. to me its one more thing to think about i don t need to when riding. |

The desired outcome is the same, speeding up the engine revs to match the speed of the gear you are changing down to. This allows the gear to engage more smoothly and no jerking / lurching when the clutch is released. |

A slipper clutch only affects when the clutch is released and the engine braking affects the wheel. Doesn't actually smooth the shift itself out.
The back wheel skipping on the SV is quite entertaining too ![]()

I do, same reasons.
Although because I to it so often, it's almost become habit and I even do it when going slowly and really don't need to ![]() |
