I think the reason is that corrosion weakens them much more than steel, possibly due to material being less tough than steel surface corrosion acts as a path for fracture?
I dunno, plated steel is alright but I wouldn't use ally.

Reading this i am abit sceptical now, but i keep them clean and just put a coat of this wax stuff my dad bought, it aout to help keep road cr*p off them.
