My experience says this. Get a new choke cable, and the little plastic/rubber bits on the end near the plungers (its something i keep meaning to do, the plungers bits that is). I dont use any grease, but carb claner a cotton but on the sockets where the plungers go, and some wire wool on the plungers themselves.

Its much much easier if you pop the cabrs off the bike. The best way to do this is to start by removing the cable form the lever 1st, then the carbs off the bike remembering the idel adjuster, and the leads etc for the carb heaters. its fiddly but after lots of swearing and braking the choke cable where it splits in 2, i now take them off every time. Whilst its off, add a length of tubing to the front vaccum point so it makes it easy to balance if/when needed.

Yeah front carb was my worse one (not so much full of **** but was causing issues and is the hardest to get to ). Listen to viney though I'd guess he's a lot more qualified to dispense advice than me! (my beard is drawn on)

The cable itself is fine just the rubber rings could do with replacing.
I will have to get a few spares and take the carbs in bit's just to give them a check over.
Hoping it sorts my idle and engine problem tho.

how's it running mine was cutting out when cold (even when dropping the revs for down shifting!) and high revs/hanging when warm.

O.k so i have the screw out which holds on the retaining plate for the rear choke plunger, erm should it just pull out or what? i don't want to over-extend the spring....

Yeah just back the plunger (the spring is between the cable and the plunger anyway, shouldn't really stretch it unless it's seized solid). just be careful it's got to come out one way or another.

Very bad idle (needle all over the place)
When riding the revs pick up and drop on there own = very unsmooth ride.

Not sure about a choke causing that much havoc, possibly massive airleak round the carbs but sounds like maybe it is **** in the carbs. Not sure though

Sounds like carbs issues. I would start with checking the choke cable assembly from one end to the other. Then whilst the carbs are off, give them a clean and lubricate, etc. Once all done, then get them balanced and this should help your tick over. If not then check the plugs, and the plug/socket on the ECU.

I clean and check mine about once a year, and every year i say, ooo, i should replace the rubber bits and the plastic bits, glue them, and wrap them with a fresh cable tie!

Probably because they're siezed!

Ta Rob.
The plungers themselves don't cause the problem, it's water getting down through the cable that does.

Pull the cable off, get a cable oiler and pack the cable with spray grease. Using the little hole in the splitter, fill it with grease. Put a blob of the stuff in with the springs behind the plungers.

This does a good job of preventing rust from the cable preventing the plunger from returning.
