Seeing as I have got most things off my bike at the moment is it worth having a go at checking the valve clearances?

Useful but be careful listening to anything she has to say. She misses some pretty glaringly obvious stuff... like the difference between exhaust stroke and compression stroke.

She also whinges a lot. CCT is easy to get to compared to some others...

ok - I'll have a read up and see if that's the weekends job for me then, the front cover is off. With the cover off and the carbs off do I need to do anything to it like stuff a rag down the open holes to protect it at all? It's in a garage so reasonably dry (excluding the fog at the moment).

Yes put a carrier bag or a rubber glove over inlet. Also bolt cam cover back in place loosely, or put carrier bag over it and tie a string round. Better safe than sorry.
